http://www.fishingvideos.comRoyal Polaris docked at Fisherman's Landing July 7 as skipper Roy Rose brought his 35 anglers home from an eight-day trip that visited Alijos Rocks and Cedros Island, then spent two days in open water fishing on mixed yellowfin, bluefin and albacore.
The best fish of the trip was a wahoo that moved into the young season's top spot. The 76-pound ???skin was caught by Angel Cruz of San Diego on a Fish Trap seven-inch swim bait in white "glow" color.
Angel won first place for his lanky prize. He said he took it on straight Spectra, an Accurate 665 N reel and a Calstar 6480 rod.
Mike Birmingham of Snelling was second, for a 61.2-pound yellowfin, and Matt Brown, a 22-year-old student (computers and robotics) from San Diego won his first long-range jackpot spot; third place for a 58.4-pound yellowfin tuna.
The charter was sponsored by www.ringedhooks.com owner Guy MacDonald, who has picked up a new product line in Raider Lures, via a contract with Esanyil Lures for import. Guy said he had three metric tons of Raiders, Snipers and Maniac jigs coming in shortly.
"The best fishing was in two places," remarked chartermaster MacDonald, "at Alijos Rocks and in the open water about 140 miles from San Diego. At Alijos it was flat calm and 72 degrees. The best rig to get bit with there was 40-pound line and fluorocarbon leader. At Cedros we got yellowtail and calico bass, but we left after a half day when we heard about the good tuna fishing farther north. Up that way we found a school that stayed with us, and we did very well.
"The purple Raiders got bit the best at Alijos," concluded MacDonald.
Vince Biondo of Del Mar used a gold Raider 200 to take a 51-pound wahoo. Vince didn't enter the jackpot.
More new products on the Royal Polaris came from George Swarberg of Newport Beach; new rod butt devices to use instead of a rod belt. The cushions are called Knobbies, and the motto is, "Pop a Knobbie on your rod."
The Knobbies will go into distribution for tackle stores July 10, said George.
