"The name of the game at Guadalupe is quality, not quantity," wrote American Angler skipper Brian Kiyohara August 17. "We fish for tuna at the island typically from June through November. We have seen all different types of conditions but overall it seems like the perfect situation would be to be on anchor with scattered fish showing all around and having a steady pick. Having to fish hard for just a couple of bites a day would quite often be the best that one can ask for.

"The ???cast out a bait, and put it in gear-type fishing' doesn't happen all the time, and when it happens, it is usually just for a brief moment. Today we were lucky enough to be anchored in a good spot, where we experienced great steady action. To have 40 to 75-pound fish boiling around the boat all day in a biting mode most of the time is actually a pleasure that doesn't happen often."

Brian docked his rig at Point Loma Sportfishing August 18, after five days on the Uesugi/Kimura Charter with 26 anglers, which visited Guadalupe and Benitos. The best fish were yellowfin, which swept the top spots.

Toshio Kimura of Placentia took a 105-pound tuna with a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He used 40-pound blue Izorline on a TLD 20 reel and a seven-foot homebuilt rod.

"He hit with a boil on the water, and just kept going straight," said Toshio, "I was down to my last 70 feet of line when he slowed, and I wound him in with low gear. At the end he bobbed up like a cork. He was done, and had no power left."

Jim Chaunsee of Sacramento won second place for an 87-pounder, and Frank Delgado of Sacramento was third, for a 75-pound yellowfin tuna. Blake Lebeck of Morgan Hill had the best yellowtail, a 40-pounder he got with a sardine and 25-pound line, and stood in with the winners.
