PELICAN LAKE: (December 13) The lake must have frozen during a recent blizzard because the ice is cloudy. The reservoir is also being filled, and the new water is soaking into the snow, creating a ring of slush. Near the road, this ring can be 15 to 20 feet wide and up to six inches deep. It is difficult to see because there is a layer of white snow over the slush. Once you're past the ring of slush, the ice is thicker, but its cloudiness makes it difficult to gauge thickness. Be prepared to wade through the slush and then check the ice carefully.
