"After a couple of days of good yellowtail fishing at the Island," wrote Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates August 12, "we are heading up the line. Nice weather down there and nice size yellows with a couple of Black Sea Bass (released) and 10 White Seabass to give us some variety. We finished off last night at Bonitos and saw very good sign and picked up a few more yellows before heading up to fish kelps. The main focus today is dorado, with everyone having their fill of nice size yellows. The weather is still good and visibility for kelps will be just fine."

At H&M Landing August 14, Cates weighed the best of the catch, and 15-year-old Corey Commentz of San Diego won first place. Corey plays first base at Westview High. His white seabass weighed 37.4 pounds. He caught it with a Salas blue and white 6X Jr. jig on 40-pound P-Line, a Trinidad 40 reel and a California rod.

"That's my first white seabass," said Corey, who posed first with chartermaster David Rosenthal of Encino and www.westcoastanglers.com and again with the other winners. David had a good dorado from under a paddy.

"We had quality yellowtail fishing," said Rosenthal, "and some white seabass, good kelp fishing and three black sea bass, released. We also had some special Salas 6X Jr. jigs in black, blue and chrome."

Art Green, Newport CPA, won second place for a 34.5-pound white seabass. "I don't know how I did it," said Art, "but I got two of them."

Janet Colmerauner of Torrance won third place, for a 33.6-pound yellowtail. "He spooled me!" Janet remarked.

"We had just great inshore fishing," said skipper Cates.
