It was a great week of fishing at Convict Lake. By far the hottest week of the 2014 fishing season. It started out with 3 and 4 pounders being weighted-in at the general store and continue throughout the week. A few dozen lunkers were brought into the store by weeks end. I want to thank all the folks who bring in their fish to be photographed and tell their story of how it was caught. This fishing report would not be possible without all of you. Catch of the Week: Congratulations to Harley Wallace from El Cajon, CA with a beauty landed along the north side of the Inlet. He was using a Power Worm when he hooked this 6 pound 1 ounce rainbow. Way to go, Harley!
Tactics/Bait: Same as last week, one of the hottest lures was a Power Worms or Mice Tails. I suggest going with pink, red or orange colors. Set up your rig with a large clear bubble, about a three foot leader and a single hook. I like using a Owner Mosquito Hook in either a size 8 or 6. Kastmasters were also knocking them dead out at the lake. Rainbow and silver colors produced some quality fish. In the creek use Salmon Eggs and give small spinners like a Panther Martins a try. The most successful Powerbait colors were peach and yellow. The Inlet, North and South Shore were the hottest spots this week. Other locations fishing well were the Jetty and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive: Sierra Slammers, Tasmanian Devil, Green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Trout Teasers, Panther Martin, NeedleFish, Rooster Tails, and Bite-on Fury Shad or Lip Ripperz Hatchery Dust on Powerbait.
