Madison River Fish Report

The Madison will have some terrestrial fishing as the weather gets warmer. It looks like we have finally broken from the wet stormy conditions we had over the past two weeks. Definitely have ants in your fly box for the rest of September. It's been a great year for them on the Madison, Hebgen Lake and the Henry's Fork. Especially flying cinnamon ants. Also have your beetles and hoppers. If you're floating in that lower area like McAtee the banks are prime hopper habitat. Now that the water has cooled off the nymphing will be solid throughout the day. The deeper we get into September the better the streamer fishing will be. Chuck a streamer behind big rocks and strip it down the bank. You'll be surprised by how quickly a big brown will eat it. Fast enough that you wonder if we should be fishing frogs or mice. If there are clouds in the sky think about Baetis. They could emerge on almost any day.
