Irvine Lake trouting excellent, 12.14 pounder tops catches

Report Date:

The weather seems to finally be turning around after several cold and windy weeks at Irvine Lake, reported Daniela Galvadon at the Pro Shop. "Saturday was absolutely gorgeous", Said Galvadon."The fishing was great too, since we had stocked on Friday. Some gusty winds made conditions more difficult on Sunday, but by Wednesday morning it was perfect again." Plenty of good limits of fish are being checked in. The majority of the catches ranged from 1 to 5 pounds, with a liberal sprinkling of 6 to 9 pounders keeping things interesting. Trollers scored a slightly larger grade of fish, with Rapalas doing the most damage. The most popular choice was firetiger-color CD5 and CD3's trolled mid-lake. Some lake veterans pulled out their secret weapons, which included brown trout-color jointed J5's and J7's, along with hot chub-color Taildancer TD5's. The largest fish of the week was a beautiful 12.14 pound rainbow by Jim Martinez of Ontario. Martinez hooked the whopper while trolling with a firetiger-color CD5 Rapala at mid-lake, and battled the beast for over 20 minutes on just 4-pound test line. Bait dunkers did best on the Power Bait/nightcrawler combo, with 2-pound test leader material being a must. Underwater visibility is 3 to 5 feet, making 10 to 12-inch leaders the way to go. Some shorecasters nailed fish on spinners, with the Blue Fox Vibrax being among the favorites. Productive locations included the west shoreline, mid-lake, and along the dam restriction lines. The pipe in Sierra Cove continues to run, and is concentrating both fish and anglers. The Kid's Lagoon was also good for families with children age 12 and under. Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included: Jim Martinez of Ontario, 12.14 pound rainbow trout on a Rapala at mid-lake 11-year old Dylan Chrisman of San Bernardino, 9.4 pound rainbow trout on a Blue Fox Vibrax spinner at mid-lake Larry Faiella of Cypress, 9.1 pound rainbow trout on a Roostertail at the west shore Ed Shawgo of Stanton, 6.6 pound rainbow trout on Power Bait at the west shore Bob Record of Riverside, 6.4 pound rainbow trout on a Rapala near the dam
