Norm Kagawa docked his Shogun October 12 after a 10-day Hi's Tackle trip that spent two and a half days at Alijos Rocks. The 17 anglers found action on Alijos yellowtail after sundown, a bite that came on "like a freight train," a crewman remarked.

"The weather came up where Billy (Billy Santiago Jr.) skippering Royal Polaris) was at," said Skipper Kagawa at Fisherman's Landing. "We did well with the night time bite at Alijos, but the day bite really slowed down."

"We just picked away at the Rocks," said crewman Eric Greff, "Then at night, it went off!"

Jim Valenzuela of Napa Valley took home the best yellowtail of the trip; a 44.4-pound Alijos mossback caught on the dropper loop. "He bit in the morning," said Valenzuela, "right after the Captain said we should give the dropper loop a shot. He's my best yellowtail ever; it was a great trip!"

Mike Jaca of Emerald Hills took home first place for a 69.4-pound yellowfin tuna. Jaca fished a sardine on an unknown hook with 60-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon, a Penn reel, and a Tiburon rod. Jaca also placed third in the jackpot for a 68-pound yellowfin.

"The Shogun personnel did a great job," said Jaca.

Ron Sheffer of Napa Valley was second for a 69.4-pound yellowfin.
