IThe California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is currently accepting applications in Orange County for its Senior Volunteer Program (SVP). Those interested have until Dec. 31, 2006 to apply for the two-week, 80-hour training academy scheduled for February 2007.

Launched in 2002, the SVP is geared for members of the public over age 50 and provides conservation and enforcement education through community outreach. Senior volunteers monitor DFG ecological reserves and wildlife areas, and educate the community on habitat and pollution awareness. They also inspect DFG permitted facilities to ensure animal welfare, and provide administrative assistance. Senior volunteer duties include responding to public requests, public safety incidents, and nuisance wildlife concerns.

Volunteers may also represent DFG's enforcement program and other DFG programs at public outreach events. Additionally the volunteers conduct community programs, which include wildlife and marine watch tours that increase DFG presence in coastal and inland communities. Administrative duties include data entry, program development and special assignments. The program unit manager schedules volunteers on a monthly basis, and individuals have the opportunity to express preference for particular activities as long as the needs of the program are met.

Applicants must demonstrate an overall enthusiasm for the program and must be teachable, available and accountable as well as willing to conform to volunteer task requirements. Volunteers must also be able to follow directions and enjoy working with people.

All interested applicants should obtain a downloadable on-line application at www.dfg.ca.gov/oceo/svp, or contact the Senior Volunteer Program Unit Manager Joseph Torres at (949) 337-5245.
