Hunting Access Affected at State and Federal Lands in the Sutter Bypass

CDFG

Report Date:

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/news/

To ensure public safety and resource conservation, a portion of the east and west levees of the Sutter Bypass Wildlife Area will be closed to waterfowl hunting. The Sutter Bypass Wildlife Area consists of the levees separating the Sutter National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR) sanctuary from adjacent private lands. They measure approximately 100-150 feet wide by 5.56 miles long, totaling approximately 101 acres.

The levees are topped with public roads open to vehicle traffic. Hunting on the levee posed a risk of firearm related accidents and vandalism. Inadvertent loss of dead or wounded birds, skyscraping, hunter trespass violations and wanton waste will be reduced by restricting hunting in this area. The levees will not be closed to public access, only waterfowl hunting.

The west levee of the Sutter Bypass Wildlife Area will be closed from the northern boundary of the SNWR south to Oswald/Hughes road; the east levee will be closed from the northern boundary of the SNWR south to the SNWR check station parking lot. An additional closure to all hunting applies to the east levee of the Sutter Bypass Wildlife Area from the SNWR parking lot south to the southern boundary of the SNWR. All other portions of the Sutter Bypass Wildlife Area will continue to remain open for hunting, fishing and other recreation as normal.
