Becoming an Outdoors-Woman, California offers "A Day at the Range" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24 at Livermore-Pleasanton Rod and Gun Club. The workshop, limited to 25 participants, offers expert advice to women on the skill of firing shotguns.

"Find out why more and more women are taking up the sport of using a shotgun," said Susan Herrgesell, BOW California president. "Woman can be intimated the first time they shoot a shotgun, but once they break that clay, it's difficult pulling them off the range."

Herrgesell has designed the one-day workshop for anyone who has considered taking up shooting as a hobby or for those interested in hunting. The course will help prepare potential hunters for the state's required hunter safety class.

Instructors will tutor in basic firearm safety, as well as the different types of ammunition available. The workshop will also teach how to use a shotgun's sight alignment, and how to develop a good fit with a firearm.

Instruction will cover proper shotgun cleaning and maintenance.

Other subjects deal with shotgun chokes and patterns, safety locks, eye and ear protection and outdoor shooting ethics. Participants will get plenty of practice breaking clays at the Livermore-Pleasanton Rod and Gun Club, 4000 Dagnino Road, Livermore in Alameda County.
