DON’T FORGET THE JACKET (even if it’s warm in Bishop)

WATCH OUT FOR DEER especially if you’re on the road around dawn or dusk.

It was memory-making week at the Lake. More than a few families made Lake Sabrina their Fathers’ Day Weekend memory-making destination. With the blazing heat in Bishop, the cool temps at the Lake made for some down-right good times.

So, we got our BIG FISH from Desert Spring Trout Farm in Oregon and you want to talk BIG FISH – 3 to 10 pounders were stocked all over Bishop Creek Canyon on Friday including Lake Sabrina. We, also, were stocked by DFW on Wednesday, so there’s lots of fish to be caught although quite a few were caught over the week. Siblings from the Borst/Edgerton/Proctor Family from Phoenix – Jim, Wendi, Wyatt & Jacob Borst – took a few fish home for dinner with Jacob catching his first fish every. Tom, Angie and Liam bested sister Wendi with a nice stringer while Grandpa Pat Edgerton of Dana Point met up at the Lake with granddaughters Becca & Courtney Proctor to take a number of nice looking trout home along with some great memories. Lake Sabrina was also the reunion destination vacation of the Hendrikson Family – some coming from as far away as Hawaii (they needed their mountain fix). Greg Hendrickson made it very memorable landing a nice 3-pounder using a KastMaster. Another memory making time with Dad Steve Olson as he wore a proud smile as Johnny (6yrs) of San Clarita pulled in a 2-1/2 Rainbow. Jeff & Jake Owen had some Father-Son time on the Lake, Father teaching Son the finer points of fishing and catching.

As you probably realized, the catching is on the up-take. Fishing the Inlets is still the best – don’t forget about the George Inlet on the left side of the Lake about 200 yards from the back; quite a few fish hanging about. It’s the same stuff that we always talk about: NightCrawlers, PowerBait, Salmon Eggs and Jigs (Sierra Slammers). Trolling is finally starting to pick-up – try dragging a lure with a bit of red, such as the Red/Gold Thomas Buoyant or just pull a NightCrawler with a swivel and split-shot – just don’t forget that swivel. Might try drifting thru the channels or around the rock piles dunking a NightCrawler or using PowerBait. If you shore fishing, you might do a bit better taking a walk away from the Landing and using NightCrawlers or PowerBait.

It's a good thing the Lake’s filling, had a two-wheel drive go over the hill towards the back of the Lake - cut off 4 hours of fishing time getting unstuck - when they saw Rick take the photo - they're comment "we’re going to be on the website, aren’t we?" 😜 They had a smile on their face as they left the Cafe after pie and ice cream finally ready to wet a line. And the Lake came up quite a bit during the week – the lifejacket/cushion trail was on the move as were the docks again. Parking is at a premium in the Lake bottom and there is no access via AUTO to the back – just ask the boys who stuck their truck!

Saw quite a few families from the CHSRA Finals Rodeo that was held in Bishop this week. It’s definitely an honor meeting these pleasant –outgoing kids and their families. Good luck to all the California winners and good luck at Nationals. If you got out to the fairgrounds to cheer them on, Thank You!

The Purple Lilacs joined the White Lilacs to make the small trail going down to the launch ramp smell delectable. The Yellow Columbines are blooming, the Purple Penstemons are popping and the Purple Chives are blossoming. With the late snow and rains we got in May and now the warm temperatures, the wildflower show should be outstanding.

The skeeters are back in hoards, so don’t forget the bug juice, but remember to try and keep it, your sunscreen and any other Foo-Foo juices off your hands – fish don’t like the taste or smell.

If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –that sun is pretty bright against the blue sky and the glare off the water. AND DON’T FORGET A JACKET!

If your hiking with a dog, watch their paws – many ‘city’ dogs are not quite prepared for a long hike on the trail. Saw a number of hikers carrying their furry friends down from the backcountry this weekend. And don’t forget your own ‘paws’, where the right shoes – rubber boots are the ideal hiking boot!

If you’re planning on hiking – PLEASE BE PREPARED – hike with a buddy – leave a note on where you’re headed – when you’re expected back – what you’re wearing – take plenty of water & food – dress in layers – you’ll start out cool, but will probably warm up – CHECK THE WEATHER! Not only is your life on the line, so are the Search and Rescue Teams. Also, if you meet stock on the trail, please go to the low-side, that way if the mules are startled they’ll go to the high side and not down the canyon.

Summer is definitely here. Temps up at the Lake will cool thru this coming week a bit, but by the weekend we are expected to be back up in the low-80s for highs and in the high-40s to mid-50s for lows. You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.
