Striper time at Del Valle

Stripers, Stripers, and more Stripers are being caught. An average sized striped bass is anywhere from 2 to 8 pounds. Anchovies have been the key to success on the lake this week. When fishing with Anchovies it is very important to cut the heads and tails off, this makes the bait leak more blood and oils. It also makes the bait a lot more streamline, meaning the fish can pick it up and swallow it much easier. The head and tail can catch on the edge of the mouth causing you to miss the bite, when you remove those parts the fish can literally inhale the bait. Don't forget to throw those heads and tails in the water, to create a powerful scent trail in your fishing hole. Last week, 500 pounds of catfish were planted, a lot of those cats were over 5 pounds. Catfish can be caught on the same techniques as stripers but, Catfish are notorious for hitting like a ton of bricks and stealing rods right off the boat or even out of your hands. It’s a good idea to let cats run with the bait for a little bit, they like to pick up bait and run for a few yards before stopping and swallowing it. Catfish can be found on the edges of big points and drop offs like in Heron Bay or in the weed beds in the back of coves. (925) 449-5201
