This week we have had a little cooler weather, most days are in the mid 60’s to lower 70’s. We will see the weather heating for this coming weekend with highs in the low to mid 90’s, which will make conditions great for fishing.
The water temperature is around 72 degrees by the marina, but if you get to the Dam area, water temperature is about 64 degrees at the surface. The Trout seems to be preferring the Dam are due to the cooler water. Recently, Mt. Lassen planted 750 lbs of trout.
CATFISH
Catfish have been showing up more and more every day. As the water temps heat up, the bite will just get better and better. The best bait to use is Anchovies or Chicken Livers. If you do target cats, try looking in areas with cover, fallen trees, and weed beds.
TROUT
Trout fishing is slowing down as the water temperature rises. Most anglers are reporting catches near the Dam where the water is still fairly cold. They have been fishing in areas with deeper water, about fifteen to twenty feet of water. The best bait to use in Powerbaits, or night crawlers. Some deep diving lures have also been working.
BASS
Black Bass are still post spawn, and are currently protecting their young. Please release them when you catch them, so that we can increase their population. The best areas to fish for Black Bass is weed beds, downed trees or any type of cover. Best type of bait is Night Crawlers. Many anglers have been successful using artificial worms, senkos or robo worms, Crankbaits or Rat-l-Traps.
STRIPED BASS
Striped Bass is still the hot bite! No real big sizes have been reportedly caught, but we have seen many anglers showing up with Striped Bass with weights from 3-7 pounds. If Striped Bass is what you are looking for, you need to be fishing in water around 10 to 15 feet. The best baits to use will be Anchovies, Chicken Livers, Mackerel and Sardines with a Carolina rig.
