http://www.fishingvideos.com"We had decent fishing everywhere we went," owner-skipper Brian Kiyohara said after he returned American Angler to Point Loma Sportfishing February 1. "We were getting ten fish a day from 130 to 230 pounds outside Clarion, and we finished up on the beach with 40 to 130-pounders."
The 14-day Bob's Sporting Goods charter returned with a good catch of wahoo and a fair catch of tuna, including a Clarion cow for Avet Rep Ben Frazier of Oxnard.
Frazier's 231-pound yellowfin took 20-minutes to reel in; good for first place in the jackpot.?? He fished a fly-lined mackerel on a 12/0 Owner hook, 130-pound Yo-Zuri with 130-pound Jerry Brown Line One Spectra, an Avet SDS reel that "worked wonderful, as always."
Ray Salvador of San Bernardino placed second for a 191-pound tuna, also caught at Clarion.
"We saw a lot of fish breaking on bird schools and porpoise," Ray said, "but they were eating smaller bait. This one bit a big mackerel on a 12/0 Mustad circle hook. No tuna at Hurricane Bank, all wahoo."
Bill Randall of Foothill Ranch was third for a 180-pounder that bit a fly-line mackerel on 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon.
"I got all my wahoo at Hurricane Bank," remarked Jay Love of Carlsbad. "We had a bite at the Southern Banks that lasted for an hour and a half.?? It was great. They just stayed in the corner, it was real easy to catch ???em then."
Guillermo Medrano of Palmdale will receive $500 for returning an archival tag to Ed Everett of the IATCC.?? Guillermo's 70-pound yellowfin was caught at the Banks; where the Royal Star performed a tagging trips a couple of months ago.
"The tag looks new," said Everett.
