THE CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT - THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND MORE

While the billfish counts have slowed a bit, they are still pretty good for February, even as the currents and water temps continue with their annual changes at this time of year. Instead of just running out and catching a handful or so, the crews are having to work harder for the fish. High boat for the week was the "Fish Cabo I", reflecting 5 stripers released for 2 fishing days. Overall combined fish counts for the Gaviota Fleet & Fish Cabo boats for a total of 49 fishing days reflected 53 stripers, (50 released) 1 dorado and 36 yellowfin tuna, (mostly school size fish).

Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days with light northwest breezes and temps from 58 nights to 79 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: The warmer waters, (69-70 degrees) are along the 1,000 curve, from just outside and south of the Jaime Bank & around to the Cabrillo Seamount, then into the beach between the Gorda and Las Frailes. From the Golden Gate Bank on the Pacific, and on out to about 10 miles and around to Chileno Bay, the waters have cooled to 63-65 degrees.

Best Fishing Area: This week continued to be the "Golden Gate Bank", but due to the falling temps, I would expect that to change for the coming weeks.

Best Lure/Bait: Live bait is definitely best and much of the action has been on spotting the fish and baiting.

Live bait supply: Very good supply with a mix of mackerel and caballitos.

THE MAZATLAN FISH REPORT - THE ARIES SPORTFISHING FLEET

Cold water continues to make the fishing difficult from Mazatlan. However, there was some "light at the end of the tunnel" yesterday, as the "Aries III" reported a 5 marlin release day. Overall counts for the offshore fleet that reflected 13 fishing days was 8 stripers and 1 yellowfin tuna. The inshore super pangas, reporting for 6 days fished, reflected 5 toto, 8 vaquetas, 6 pargo, 8 cochis, 4 conejos, 18 loras and 3 lenguas.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly sunny days, but cool nights and mornings, temps from 47 nights to 81 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Inshore waters at 64 degrees, rising to 67 for the offshore waters

Best Fishing Area: Again this week, the boats were searching far & wide for the fish and with exception to the "Aries III" with the 5 billfish release, it was very difficult and no special area was different from the other.

Best bait/lure: All of the billfish were taken on rigged baits.

Overall combined counts for 47 fishing days with the Gaviota Fleet and Fish Cabo boats reflected......
