http://www.fishingvideos.comSkipper Danny Nichols returned Intrepid May 30 after a six-day trip to Cedros Island. The Western Outdoor News charter saw rough weather and cold water at the island, and finished the trip with some rock cod and lings on the way up. The boat wanted to thank Pat McDonell and Avet Reels for nightly gifts and drawings.
"We got all our nicer yellows at Cedros," said crewman Kevin Cleary, "including one over 50 pounds. We also got some halibut and some giant Humboldt squid off San Martin."
The big 56.6-pound mossback, the largest of its kind this season, was caught by Mick Coats of Whittier.
"I fished a mint and white Salas 7X iron," said Coats, after the fish was weighed on the certified scales at Point Loma Sportfishing. "It kicked my butt for 20 minutes. I had a nine-foot Calstar rod, a Shimano Torium reel with 30-pound line."
Don Flora of El Monte, CA used light tackle to take second for a 33.6-pound yellowtail, and Lou Kohn of Victorville won third place with a 32.8-pound yellowtail that "?Ķran on me pretty good."
Honorable mention went to Doug Mauk of Phoenix, who caught a 30.4-pound halibut and joined the jackpot lineup. He was impressed with Chef Javier Quintinar's cuisine. "Everything was good, but his clam chowder was outstanding. I had two bowls."
Sherwood Kingsley, of Culver City, CA said, "We chased tuna on the first day, but the seiners were working it west of us, so we headed to Cedros."
Intrepid has spots open for day and a half trips departing late next week.
Bluefin and Albacore
The latest report from American Angler said that even though they fished in "?Ķchoppy weather, they caught 20 Bluefin Tuna, average size 25 to 35 pounds (hot stick of the day on BFT was Dan Spiegel), seven small Albacore and one nice Yellowfin Tuna. They are headed to dirt for tomorrow's fishing."
