DELTA
Some of the best sturgeon and striped bass fishing action is taking
place over in the West Delta and 35 to 40 feet of water in the
Pittsburg area, Suisun Bay at the Mothball Fleet, Grizzly Bay and
Honker Bay. Field scouts report the action is slow but it’s worth
the wait. Recently some very large striped bass ranging in size from
12 to 30 pounds are hitting the decks using live Sacramento
splittails for bait. In the same area sturgeon are showing with eel,
roe and grass shrimp providing the best action. When fishing Delta
Waters this time of the year it is best to anchor your vessel and put
in some time and be patient. If you caught fish there before you will
catch fish there again. In the East Delta anglers are finding good
numbers of striped bass ranging in size from 18 to 22 inches casting
Ima Flit 120s in the shad pattern into the weed beds, and along the
riprap along the shoreline. Also anglers at anchor are taking striped
bass to 8 pounds dunking frozen shad in Old River and Middle River
off Bacon Island and the mouth of Indian Slough near Discovery Bay.
As the waters continue to warm up, so will the fishing.AMADOR LAKE
Shoreline anglers getting the best of the action on some trophy sized
rainbow trout with nightcrawlers, Power Bait and eggs producing the
best action. Some are reporting limits in just two hours of fishing.
The lake is now only 20 feet from capacity. The Norcal Trout Anglers
Challenge will be held at Lake Amador this coming April 28.
Currently, Lake Amador has planted over 15,250 pounds of rainbow
trout since last October. In January to due date, they have planted
over 3,100 pounds.AMERICAN RIVER
The steelhead fishing on the American River has been very slow
recently. The system is holding only an occasional steelhead and they
seem to respond to tossed Little Cleos, nightcrawlers and salmon roe.
The hatchery staff has taken a total of 568,000 eggs today with a
goal of over 1 million which they say they will reach this year.
Current water releases out of Nimbus dam are 2000 CFS. Not much
action on resident striped bass holding in the deeper sections off
Cal Expo.

CAMANCHE RESERVOIR

Both shoreline anglers and boaters are taking good numbers of quality
rainbow trout. With over 34,800 pounds of Mount Lassen rainbow trout
planting since October with the plant split between the North Shore,
South Shore and the Southpond. Field scouts report some great
trolling action while trolling grubs in the Narrows and while
throwing Speedy Shiners. Some of the recent catches have exceeded 7
pounds in weight.

OCEAN

Sand dabs, surf perch and Dungeoness crab is the only action taking
place outside the Golden Gate these days. Shoreline anglers are
getting into some solid surf perch fishing with some weighing in at
Pacifica’s Rockway Beach. Some of the perch weighed over 2 pounds.
Shrimp seems to be the bait of choice. Some of the other ports-of-
call report fair Dungeoness crab pot pulling, especially off Bodega
Bay and Monterey Bay. This year they expect an excellent halibut
fishing season in the San Francisco Bay.

Take time to go out and enjoy the great outdoors stay safe to fish
another day along with some good fishing. Always remember to have
your PFT (personal flotation device) at the ready or better yet by
having it on your person in case of an emergency.
Until next time stay tuned for periodic updates on the fishing in the
fabulous Delta waterways.
