Yesterday was a travel day for us and we enjoyed beautiful weather all day. We covered wahoo fishing in our tackle seminar after breakfast. Wahoo are one of the most difficult fish to hook once you get a bite fishing with a bomb or jig but, with the proper technique, you can increase your bite to hook up ratio drastically. By fishing no less that 50# line, a heavy rod like a Seeker 6470H, a bigger reel like an Avet HX 5/2, a heavy drag, and making sure that you wind through the bite for at least 10 seconds without lifting your rod, setting the hook entirely with the reel, will insure that you get the hook into the fish. Always keep in mind that wahoo go around their entire lives cutting feed in half with their sharp teeth and they are trying to do the same thing when they bite your jig. That being said, when you get your bite, 9 our of 10 times the wahoo has your jig in their mouth and not the hook. When the fish realizes it made a mistake and opens its mouth to let go of the jig, you are continuing to wind on your reel and you wind the hook into the fish. This technique, when used properly, works almost every time. The rest of our day was spent rigging, relaxing, playing poker, and telling fish storys. Chef Brian and his assistant Chasen knocked it out of the park with an incredible dinner of Osso Buco finishing with a homemade puff pastry, ice cream and berries dessert. Life is Good.
