Andy Cates was on his way home Labor Day evening when he came across a large school of yellowfin tuna in the 20 to 25-pound range. His anglers had a ball with the fish until Andy had to head for the barn.

"They were loose fish," he said at the dock September 2, meaning they were discovered in open water, "and it was a great sunsetter. I'd have to say it was good sign between 125 and 150 miles. A couple of other boats are going to take a look there today.

"We had limits of yellows at the Benitos," he continued, "but fishing at Guadalupe was just fair."

Bill Singleton of San Jacinto only needed 15 minutes to boat his jig-biting, first-place yellowfin at Guadalupe. It weighed 34.3 pounds, and Bill said it came on a blue and white Salas 6X Jr. jig, 40-pound Big Game line, 60-pound Spectra, an Avet JX reel and a Daiwa seven-foot rod.

Alan Walbridge of Ventura got a 33.3-pound yellowtail for second place, and Norman Pokorny of San Diego won third place for a 33.2-pound yellow.
