The lake temperature out here at Del Valle is still hovering in the mid to low 60’s in the morning but later in the day going as high as 68! With the trout out here giving their last push before the water temperature rises too high. The next week or two is looking like mild weather so expect these trout to hang around for awhile longer. The trout are gunning hard for shad imitations, spoons and Kastmasters work well for getting the trout interested in your lure, smaller spinnerbaits can work as well. If you are fishing from shore the east beach area is a favorite to land the trout and is quite accessible for anyone. If you prefer to use bait the corn yellow powerboat has been the main powerbait that anglers out here use to catch the trout if you can get out on the lake on a boat anchoring off to the center of the cove and drifting your bait is pretty effective strategy to hook up if you want to cast lures throwing a smaller Kastmaster is one of the best lure to use out here either flate chrome or gold.
The small largemouth bass are also biting well with many anglers using nightcrawler to hook up with the bass the south end of the lake from shore because the south end is perfect spawning habitat for the bass so most of our bass hang out over there. If you have a boat the rock points with the deep drop offs are the best bet. Many of the bass are nesting right now so try to find areas where they might be spawning.
The striped bass bite has come alive with many of our stripers being caught on anchovies being soaked out in Heron Bay, as the water temperature heats up look out for the striped bass boils the shad in the lake have started to spawn and will bring the boils alive.
The catfish bite has also been doing well with many of out catfish being caught fishing bait by the fallen trees in the water, chicken liver or anchovies are the preferred bat out here. The catfish are also moving in the tulle patches around the lake if you see carp rolling over the catfish are probably around too.
The perch fishing is going great as well with many anglers using red worms to hook into these each to catch and fun to fight fish! Tossing the red worms at any structure around the lake will result in a stick quit quickly, if not just recast!
