Great Weather For Striped Bass Fishing

East Bay Regional Park District

Report Date:

The lake temperature has been hovering in the high 70’s, making it great weather for striped bass fishing!

The sunfish bite has really picked up at the water temperature increases. We recommend casting some red worms or mini-crawlers. You can find the bluegill and crappie around the weed mats near the shores or near the cattails as they are using these structures for spawning.

TROUT

The trout are almost out of season with only a few caught using smell baits. If you are determined to trout fish, the Heron Bay dam area is going to be your best bet because this area of the lake has the deepest and therefore the coolest water. You will need to get your lures deep to find the trout. Any Powerbaits with extra scents is a good bet.

CATFISH

The catfishing has been slow, but it is still a good bet to use anchovies or large mackerel. Throwing these baits near a fallen tree, as close as possible without getting snagged is the key to getting the catfish on your line. Many of our catfish also enjoy large nightcrawlers. Look for carp along the shoreline, the catfish love to hand around with the carp.

BASS

The bass are moving out here, but are a little lethargic. We really only see them moving to defend their nests, so you are going to want to target them using displacement, such as with lures like rattletraps, crankbaits, or spooks. There are lots of bass around the cattails or reed mats that are around the whole lake. We recommend braided line for bass fishing because the bass will snag you!

STRIPED BASS

The striped bass are moving in the Heron Bay area, preferring to stay near the shorelines. Later in the day, the striped bass move down to the upper narrows. For bait, we suggest using cut anchovies or sardines. We recommend casting your bait as far out towards the channel as possible. If you prefer to use splittail swimbaits, topwater spooks, or shad imitations, you will be in luck. The striped bass seem to really be honing in on these. Cast lures at sharp points along the shore, near deep areas of the lake.

-As always enjoy the rest of your week and please be safe out there my personal thoughts and prayers are with the people who lost their lives out here at Del Valle since the last fishing report -Captain Jacob
