The East has been lowered to about 333 cfs this week. We’ve been getting some very good reports from the river lately, there are lots of anglers doing very well down there, both on the California and Nevada sides of the river. This flow can still be a little difficult for some anglers so of course not all of the folks going down there are doing well but most seem to be. Most of the action has been with nymphs but it seems like the streamer action has picked up a bit as well. As usual one of the keys to success down there is to get your flies near the bottom where the fish are hanging out, add some weight to get them down and get a good dead drift and you should be able to hook up.
Recommended Flies:
Rainbow warrior, flashback emerger, silver streak, zebra midge, WD-40, buckskin caddis, z-wing caddis, deep sparkle pupa, san juan worm, squirmy wormy, shock collar leech, slump buster, zuddler, sculpzilla, peanut, dead drift crayfish.
SCEIRINE RANCH
We haven’t had any clients on the ranch this past week, like the California side the fishing can be difficult but could definitely be worth the trip!
HUNEWILL POND
The clients we had on the pond this week were able to get into a dozen or more fish for a half day, fishing all dry hopper patterns! Seems there was good action on the surface for them this trip. The ranch staff has started the weed mowing operation for the summer to try to keep the weeds at bay. When you’re tubing around out there it’s good to search out the areas that are not too weedy and focus on them to have the best action.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR
Bridgeport fished excellent this week with numerous 3 to 5+ fish being caught out there. Most of the action has been still fishing from boats though there are still a few die-hards catching some fish trolling. Rainbow Point is producing good numbers of fish as well as the East Walker channel area out in front of the marina. There also seems to be a lot of fish moving up into the channels in Buckeye Bay so there’s been some good action up there. Night crawlers have been doing well, also pinched crawlers have produced some nice fish. Power bait and mice tails have also been bending some rods. Thr trollers have been using needlefish, Thomas Bouyants and night crawlers.
KIRMAN LAKE
We didn’t hear anything from Kirman this week, if/when we do we’ll pass the information on.
TWIN LAKES
The Twins are still producing some very nice fish these days, there have been some reports that are a bit slow but anglers who are getting out there, moving around and switching up their baits are catching some good fish. We’ve also had some reports of a few nice brookies being caught up there. The bait anglers are having success with pinched crawlers, mice tails, inflated crawlers and power bait, the trolling has produced some fish with crawlers and Thomas Bouyants. Fly anglers have been doing well from tubes or kayaks with Twin Lakes Specials, wooly buggers, matukas, seal buggers, soft hackles and zug bugs.
WEST WALKER RIVER
The West is starting to come down a bit and we’re starting to get some decent reports from up there. The water is still a bit high but if you search out the calmer stretches you should start catching some fish. We’ve had reports of some fish up to 4+ pounds being caught on the West this week. Bait anglers can go with crawlers and salmon eggs, lure anglers can use Panther Martins and Thomas Bouyants. Fly anglers will likely do the best with wet flies like prince nymphs, soft hackles, pheasant tails, hare’s ears and wooly buggers. The dry fly fishing will likely get better when the water flows get down to 300 cfs or so.
VIRGINIA LAKES
We’re still getting some good reports from the Virginias with some anglers reporting good days with bait and flies. The lure anglers are doing the best in the early morning and the late evening with Thomas Bouyants, mini jigs and Kastmasters. Bait anglers are using pinched crawlers, mice tails, power bait and inflated crawlers. Fly anglers are using seal buggers, leech patterns, matukas, soft hackles and this is the time of the year when beetles and ant patterns usually start to hit well from the surface.
