It’s Trout Tuesday, and coastal cutthroat trout on the Rogue and Applegate rivers are doing well, as this beauty, caught by Jeff Hensley this morning, shows.

Annual snorkel surveys are showing an upward trend in pool densities, especially since cutthroat were considered rare in the Rogue in the 1990s.

These upper Rogue River cutthroat are fluvial fish, using the main-stem as a feeding area and the tributaries as spawning locations.

Anadromous cutthroat trout, also known as sea-run cutthroat, are present in the system mostly downstream of Galice.

Biologists report large cutthroat caught on both the Rogue and Applegate rivers this summer, where some anglers are taking advantage of this unique opportunity in addition to fishing for summer steelhead. The salmon fly hatch is a great time of year to pursue these fish, but fall can also be a great time to try for them on flies.
