The annual turkey day voyage aboard Royal Polaris returned to Fisherman's Landing December 6 after a ten-day look at southern Baja with 23 anglers. Skipper Aaron Barnhill made his first trip as master on the big boat, though he has run many others before. He found good fishing on smaller fish but not much biting in the way of cows. There was one of those, a kite fish caught by regular angler Craig Drummond of Corona. Anglers reported seeing plenty of big fish close to the boat, but no biters.

On December 1, skipper Barnhill reported, "We had another tough day today, but it definitely was not due to lack of fish. We had fish blowing out around the boat all day again today. They just flat don't want to bite a hook bait. Several times throughout the day there were huge boils just a foot from the kite baits but just not on our hooks.

"We did manage six yellowfin, four in the 100 to 190-pound category and two in the 50 to 80-pound category. We also had sporadic dorado and marlin action throughout the day to keep things lively. Top fish honors went to Daniel Gasca with a beautiful 170-pound tuna that came on a fly lined sardine. Our weather was absolutely flat calm gorgeous, and we hope it will continue."

Danny Gasca of San Diego won first place for his 169.9-pound yellowfin. He said he bagged it with a double sardine rig under the fishing kite. He used 7/0 Super Mutu hooks, 130-pound Line One Spectra, a Penn 50 reel and a six and a half-foot Calstar rod.

Richard Stevens of La Mirada won second place for his 136.7-pounder, and Scott Task of San Ramon took a 92.8-pound yellowfin tuna to win third place.
