EAST WALKER RIVER 

The river is running about 130 cfs today. The fishing down there has still been pretty good, there has been some good cloud cover and thunderstorms most evenings this past week so that is really helping keep the temperatures down on the river which in turn keeps the fish healthy and happy. Caddis nymphs are still the bugs of choice as well as small midge patterns. There has also been some decent dry action, a little in the mornings and some in the evenings when it’s not too windy or rainy. Still haven’t had any news on any streamer action, I’d expect the streamer action to get better later in the season when it gets colder and the caddis start to go away. 

Patterns to try: Rainbow warrior, silver streak, san juan worm, squirmy wormy, micro mayflies, top secret midge, darth baetis, buckskin caddis, dark lord, copper John, LaFontaines deep sparkle pupa, z-wing caddis, Fox’s poopah, razor caddis, elk hair caddis, E/C caddis, parachute adams, blue dun, pale morning dun. 

SCEIRINE RANCH 

There is also still some good fishing on the ranch lately, as with the California side it’s mainly nymphing and some dry action. Caddis dries in the evenings and PMD’s, BWO’s and trico’s in the mornings. 

HUNEWILL POND 

We didn’t have any clients on the pond this week but as soon as we do we’ll let you know how they did! 

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR

Bridgeport is still producing some very nice fish, some up to 5+ pounds this week. The catch numbers are not really high, most days anglers are reporting 1 to 4 trout per angler but the quality is definitely good. Trolling is still the best method for success with needlefish, night crawlers, Thomas Bouyants and Rapalas. There are a few fish being caught over near Rainbow Point with inflated crawlers, pinched crawlers, mice tails and power bait but the bait fishing action doesn’t seem to be as good as the trolling action. There are still a lot of perch being caught with quite a few anglers reporting getting 10 to 20 per day, mostly trolling. 

KIRMAN LAKE 

We didn’t hear any news from Kirman this week but will pass on any info we get when it comes in. 

TWIN LAKES 

Like Bridgeport, the Twins are kicking out some very good fish, and still some good sized browns, just not really huge numbers. There were quite a few rainbows and browns in the 2 to 6 pound range caught up there this week trolling, still fishing and fly fishing. Trollers are having some success with needlefish, crawlers and Rapalas, bait anglers are going with mice tails, power bait and inflated crawlers. Fly anglers are doing the best with sinking lines and Twin Lakes Specials, wooly buggers, seal buggers, soft hackles and pheasant tails. 

WEST WALKER RIVER 

The best section of the West to fish is still in the canyon along Highway 395 up near the town of Walker. There are still some of those nice 3 to 5 pound fish cruising around up there in the deeper pockets. Spinners like Panther Martins and Vibrax lures have had some success as well as salmon eggs and night crawlers. Fly anglers have been having some success with prince nymphs, copper johns, hoppers, ants and madam x flies. 

VIRGINIA LAKES 

We had some good reports on nice fish up at Virginia Lakes this week, again, not really large numbers but some good quality fish, some going over 5 pounds. Chartreuse power bait seemed to do very well for several anglers who came in with good fish as well as pinched crawlers and mice tails. Early in the mornings and later in the evenings you can go with mini jigs, Thomas Bouyants and Kastmasters. Fly anglers can go with seal buggers, mini leeches, matukas and soft hackles.

RANDOM INFORMATION:

Sounds like the DFW is going to (if they haven’t already) have to euthanize all the fish in the hatcheries that had the bacteria we talked about last week and clean and sterilize the hatcheries and start over. There are still viable fish in the Hot Creek Hatchery which will be planted periodically in the Eastern Sierra and they are working on a schedule to make that happen. I would say that for the remainder of this season to not expect too many fish to be planted by the DFW in this neighborhood though.
