The Grasshopper Frenzy Continues!

OR Department of Fish & Wildlife Staff

Access to the Wood River is challenging due to Hwy 62 closed at the Hwy 422 junction due to the 242 fire. Anglers can access the Wood River via Westside Rd off of Hwy 140.

The grasshopper frenzy continues! Best fishing is in the early afternoon on windy days when hoppers are being blown into the river.

The Wood River is a large, very cold, clear and sinuous river. Catching fish is challenging.

Fishing is fair for brown trout. Most fish caught on dry flies are brown trout in the upper river. Fishing around the kayakers is challenging. Fish downstream of Hwy 62 to get away from some of the kayak crowd. Using spoons and rapalas also can be quite effective for catching brown trout. ODFW encourages all harvest of brook trout if you can distinguish between bull trout.

Redband trout are beginning to move out of the river into Agency Lake as water quality improves.

This fishery is best fished from a boat. You can launch personal watercraft at the BLM wetland by carrying down to the dock. Bigger boats can be launched at Petric Boat Ramp, Agency Lake Resort ($5) and Henzel Boat Ramp. Petric Park boat ramp is currently very weedy! The mouth of the Wood River is impassable to most boats. There is bank access near the Wood River Wetland but tall emergent wetland plants make fishing difficult from shore.

Low profile drift boats and small boats can be launched at USFS Day use area or Highway 62. Numerous low bridges and irrigation weirs need portaging. Larger boats and drift boats can be launched at Weed Road. Best dry fly fishing occurs above Weed Rd. Bigger brown trout and redband trout occur below Weed Road.

Please report and take a picture of any bull trout captured to the Klamath Falls ODFW office at 541-883-5732.
