Finally, a showing of the yellowfin tuna to change the pace of action
for the anglers. With the drop off of the billfish counts, the tuna
were a most welcome change to the Cabo fleets and allowed for smiling
faces on returns to the dock. High billfish count for the week again
went to the "Gaviota VIII", with Captain Juan Dominguez, with e
stripers for 3 fishing days. High tuna and dorado counts went to the
"Fish Cabo", witth Captain Gil Marquez, reflecting 40 yellowfin and
20 dorado for 2 fishing days. Overall counts for a combined total of
42 fishing days reflected 8 stripers released, 79 dorado, 1
yellowtail and 137 yellowfin tuna.
Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny and warm days, temps from 67 nights to 91
daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Pacific side was coolish waters, down to about 70
degrees in most areas that increased gradually as one rounded the
corner toward the Sea of Cortez to the 74-75 degree range by Gorda
Banks.
Best Fishing Area: The billfish were scattered but mostly on the
Cortez side of Cabo. However, the majority of the tuna and dorado
came from the Jaime Bank area on the Pacific side.
Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was best for the billfish and even then,
the fish were finicky biters. Yellowfin were running with the
porpoise, mostly school fish to about 25-30 lbs., and were anxious on
the tuna feathers in most colors. Dorado were best on the live bait.
Live Bait Supply: Good bait supply with a mix of mackerel and
caballitos.
