Hello fellow anglers. A very Happy Fishmas to you all. The weather is finally changing into winter coldness, but hopefully we will get some precipitation to boost up our snow pack for a long spring and summer runoff and a good fishing experience for 2021. As many of you have realized by now, I am not a fan of the shorter days. It cuts into my fishing time when you have to end your fishing day at 4:30 in the afternoon. But I am a fan of the winter solstice on December 21st. Because, from this day forward, the days will start getting longer by one minute each day. It may not be much, but it is a start to longer fishing days. With our colder nights, some of the local urban ponds have begun to freeze. I would like to ask everyone to stay off of the ice. The ice that forms is not stable enough to hold a person's weight and is very unstable. But in my report you will find locations where you can venture out to do some ice fishing.
SILVER LAKE: The lake has open water as of this week. Ice has started to form around the edges, but still too unstable to venture out.
CAPLES LAKE: The lake has some ice forming around the dam and the spillway area. But is still too unstable to venture out on. The area is expected to get some snow this week. I will keep you informed of when it is thick enough to venture out and ice fish.
RED LAKE: The lake has iced over and a few anglers have been getting out. I have not received any reports of the thickness. There have been a few ice skaters venturing out as well. This early in the season. When venturing out, stay closer to shore areas. The ice forms starting from the shoreline and is thicker in that area. the middle of the lake is the thinner area and may still be unstable and not strong enough to hold a person's weight. I will keep you informed of ice conditions as the season progresses.
CARSON RIVER NEVADA SIDE: The fishing has been fair up higher on the river for small trout. Remember that in Nevada, the rivers are open to fishing all year.
CARSON RIVER EAST FORK CALIFORNIA SIDE: Fishing is closed to fishing. With the exception of the section from Hangman's Bridge downstream to the stateline. This area is open to artificial lures or flies with a barbless hook. This area also has a zero limit. Catch and release only.
WALKER RIVER: The area between Wellington and Yerinton has been producing some good fishing. You will have to do some walking to get to the heavier waters. I would recommend a small spinner on the casting pole, or a copper jon on the fly rod.
INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: The lake is down and the weeds are very low. Fishing has been off and on over the last few weeks. Both roads are open. With weather coming in, use caution on them both. The paved road may have ice on it and the dirt road will be muddy and slick.
TOPAZ LAKE: The lake will open to fishing on January 1st 2021. Just a reminder, the Topaz Lodge will not be holding their annual fishing derby this year. The water level has started to rise up a little. We will all find out how the fishing is on opening. But the good news is. The Nevada Department of Wildlife has planted over 20,000 lbs of trout over the last couple months.
I hope the holidays bring you happiness and joy. I know we could all use some right now. If you have a picture of your catch, send it to sports@recordcourier.com. I hope to see you at Topaz Lake to bring in the New Year. Merry Fishmas to you all, and may you all have tight lines.
Good luck on your next fishing adventure. If you have a question. a report in our local fishing area or have a photo of your catch, send it to nevada@fishreports.com. Hope to see you on the waters. Good fishin' and tight lines.
