Fishing has been great at the Metolius. Some of the best mayfly hatches of the season are this time of year. Don’t let cool and cloudy weather stop you from heading out there. Mayfly hatches have been great. There are march browns, blue winged olives and pale morning duns in the mix. I’ve heard rumors of some sporadic green drake activity, be prepared with some of those. Caddis activity is slower on cooler days but the pupa are still on the subsurface menu. Springtime dry fly fishing is an absolute blast out there. For nymphing, try using golden stones and green drakes for your larger nymphs. General mayfly nymph patterns, like pheasant tails and hares ears, are a very good bet as well. Bull trout have been active on nymphs and streamers. It doesn’t get much better than springtime on the Metolius.
