EAST WALKER RIVER       

We’re still in the midst of a heat wave up here in the Sierra, with the water flows low and the temperatures high, it’s best not to be on the river at all right now. We’re praying for the river to stay strong through this heat but it’s going to be a tough go. If you’re wanting to fish the East Walker it’s best if you can put off your trip until the weather and water cools, likely sometime in the beginning of September. 

SCEIRINE RANCH              

As with the California side of the river it’s time to let the ranch rest, most of the reservations we had for the next 5 weeks or so have been canceled, we have a couple still on the books that we don’t have contact information on, if you have a reservation between now and September, please give us a call and we can get you off the books and book dates for later in the season when the temperatures come down. 760-932-7707       

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR             

The conditions on Bridgeport haven’t changed much this week, the water is still very warm and very green right. There hasn’t been very many anglers fishing it lately, the ones who have been have still been catching some good perch but we haven’t heard of any trout being caught lately. The perch still seem to be biting a bit on the troll with needlefish, crawlers and small Rapalas. It’s likely that the trout won’t start biting again until the water cools down.   

KIRMAN LAKE                         

No new news from Kirman this week, since they planted those brookies last week. When we hear something, we’ll pass it on!     

TWIN LAKES                      

The Twins are still a good bet in the area with lots of kokanee being caught as well as some good rainbows in the 3 to 5 pound range. There has also been several good browns caught this past week, most of which were released. Not everyone is getting into lots of fish up there, with the heat wave we’ve been having it seems that most of the fish are hanging out pretty deep during the day and coming up into shallower water in the mornings and evenings to feed. Anglers that are able to get their baits into deeper water during the day are having the most success. Sure anglers are catching some fish with Rapalas, needlefish and kastmasters, bait anglers are using pinched crawlers, mice tails and inflated crawlers. Haven’t heard about too much action from the fly anglers, typically fast sinking lines with leech patterns would increase your odds this time of the year.                               

WEST WALKER RIVER                  

We’ve been getting a few good reports from the West lately, with of course other reports that are not so good. The water is low so being sneaky is important. A few of the good reports we’ve had anglers were using night crawlers and salmon eggs for bait, and for lures they’ve been using Panther Martins and Rooster Tails. Fly anglers are still enjoying some success with hoppers, ants, elk hair caddis, stimulators, prince nymphs, copper johns and soft hackles.               

VIRGINIA LAKES                    

We’ve had some mixed reports from the Virginias lately as well, it seems as though there are lots of smaller fish being caught up there, fish that are in the 6 to 12 inch range, these fish are likely natural fish, there has also been a few larger rainbows caught but they seem to be fairly shy right now. Some of the successful anglers have been using pinched crawlers, mice tails and night crawlers. We haven’t talked to very many fly anglers lately but stripping leeches with soft hackle droppers off of intermediate sink lines should give you decent odds at some fish, also often this time of the year fishing beetles and griffiths gnat patterns on the surface can do well, especially in the late evenings.

RANDOM INFORMATION: There’s several fires in the area right now, we have had some smoke coming and going in the valley but so far it hasn’t been real bad, though this can change as the winds change. Prayers and thanks go out to all the great fire fighters who are working day and night to get these fires under control and save property and lives. There have been s few road closures for short periods of time in the area so be sure to check on that situation when travelling, you might need to make a detour to get where you’re going. It looks like we have a chance of thunderstorms for the next several days, hopefully this will cool things off and not leave any new fires in their wake.
