The California Department of Fish and Wildlife recently announced a voluntary hoot owl closure for the Truckee River. This basically means it is recommended that anglers do not fish the Truckee River afternoon due to high temperatures. In the early mornings, the Truckee River is fishing well using mostly dry flies. Current hatches include pale morning duns, various Caddis, midges, and little yellowstone flies. Some recommended dry flies to try are small and large yellow stones, size 14 to 16 birds nest, size 14 to 16 hares ears, or size 18 pheasant tails. Anglers nymphing should try using size 12-16 green or tan caddis pupa. Anglers should also use a 11 foot 3 weight ESN rod or a 9 foot, 5 weight standard trout rod on the Truckee River.
