The Metolius has been fishing consistently well. The main hatches are still caddis and pale morning duns; however, the diversity of hatches is increasing as we get closer to September. This cool weather may bring out some blue wing olives. Stoneflies are here and there, as are salmon flies. In a few weeks, we should start to see the second green drake hatch pop off, keep this in mind when selecting nymphs. Stonefly and green drake nymphs can be very productive right now, especially small olive stonefly nymphs. I’ve had a lot of luck this summer using small green or brown copper johns, which I think do a decent job of imitating PMD nymphs. Other nymphs that imitate PMD nymphs or caddis pupa are really good choices. Bull trout fishing has been good with both nymphs and streamers. Late summer and early fall can bring stupendous fishing on the Metolius.
