Weather Hampers Potential Great Fishing
We are in the middle of the best months for southland offshore fishing, there are many bright spots to report, but windy weather offshore has been a huge factor. Last weekend started with flat calm conditions and started to build Sunday afternoon, and Monday saw 20 plus knots of wind and very uncomfortable conditions. The wind backed off Tuesday but seems to want to raise it's ugly head in the afternoons as the week went on. This weekend is calling for some wind, but much improved weather conditions, and that should really help the fishing.
The big stars of the show are now yellowfin tuna. Fish are being caught as close as 25 miles from Point Loma and all the way down the baja coast. Bob Vanian from 976-BITE and
976bite.com reports that private boaters fishing in different areas are finding yellowfin, bluefin, albacore yellowtail and dorado within 60 miles of Point Loma. There has been reported some off color water towards the Butterfly Bank and other areas that earlier in the week were blue and productive.
The one day fleet is seeing occasional good scores on yellowfin and yellowtail, 3/4 day boats are finding good action on yellowtail and bonito in the middle grounds of the Coronado Islands and good sandbass fishing in the TJ flats. The long range boats are still scoring big on yellowfin tuna to 70 pounds at Guadeloupe Island, and very good fishing on a mix of albacore, small yellowfin and bluefin tuna about 150 miles from Point Loma. Book a 3-5 day trip this month and you are likely to see some fantastic fishing according to the local captains.
The Freedom from 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro
www.22ndstreet.com had an epic day of yellowtail fishing at Cortez Banks on Wednesday, with plenty of big fish to go around. Sport and private anglers have been scoring big yellowtail at San Clemente Island when the Navy allows access to the island. There has also been some very good sandbass bites along the coast.
