The Metolius is in full winter mode. Access past the hatchery may be difficult. The fish are locked near the bottom and won’t be eager to move for much, besides the occasional blue wing olive. Make sure you’re getting your nymphs down all the way to the bottom. Fish and insect activity peaks during the warmest part of the day, usually around 1-2 pm. This past week most of our success was on larger stonefly nymphs; although, green drake and general mayfly imitations were also relatively productive. Baetis nymphs are a good idea before and during a hatch. Trout in the winter are trying to conserve energy while they feed. Try to cover all the different holding spots, this will increase your chances.
