Fall has finally arrived with a wind driving the
aspens to the ground and a dusting of snow
through our canyon but nothing has stuck so far,
only dipping temperatures with increased catching
and total confusion for the trout as to what is
happening topside. Trout love this type of
weather and the extreme changes in
temperature. The lake will turn over for the 2nd
time this year in the next 4 or 5 days and
fishing/catching will drastically
improve. Didn't get this posted last Saturday,
and things have changed again. Extreme wind
arrived on Friday night through all day Saturday
will the great possibility of snow by Sunday.
Fishing did improve for those that suffered the
wind and cold air and a few nice Alpers were
taken. Michelle Dude of Foster City caught a
nice 2lb 8oz Alpers and also a 10-12lb brown on a
fly (released), it took her 26 minutes to land it
and she measured its length, width and gill to
nose, and it took her another 30 minutes to fully
revive it for release. She never removed it from
the water. Tim Healey of Newport Beach caught a
3lb Alpers on a red/gold Buoyant out of Big Virginia.
Top bait for the week was Garlic power bait,
salmon peach, night crawlers, crickets (not
frozen) and any natural bait you can find
locally. Lures were Red/Gold buoyant,
silver/blue Kastmaster, Lip Ripperz Amazon or
Tutifruti, and small Blue fox silver. Flies for
the week were black woolly buggers, black Doc's
Twin Lakes Specials, Zug Bugs, midges, blue
winged olive parachute, Cahill Light, Hendrickson
Light, but with the reversal in weather this will change in the next 3 days.
Snow is eminent by Sunday night, so be prepared
for everything up here, drive safe and see you on the water....carolyn

The weather keeps getting better, and this may be the Indian Summer of the century. A few hours of rain and hail last weekend drove the bugs from Europe into the local waters driving the fish down and compressing the water layers and maybe the lake will turnover shortly. High country waters like at our elevation of 9770 feet has it's own climate and we basically have 2 seasons, winter and August (it's a joke), but everyone knows "that if you don't like weather, wait 10 minutes",......

I may sound like a broken record when I keep saying that fishing/catching are both doing great. Yes, it has been great. I've seen some great trout swimming around during my evening jaunts on Little Virginia this past week, and there are still some hold-over Alpers and appear to be taking up residency. Fall colors are just starting and most of the trees have some yellow, but it will be around the 25th when they fully change and start their darker shades going into autumn. Huntington season......
