As of December 6th, Wild Horse State Recreation Area reported a minimum of approximately 6.5″ of ice when entering from the state boat ramp, which passes the recommended 4″ minimum for safe walking or small groups ice fishing. Remember, no ice is guaranteed to be 100% safe, always be cautious. NDOW biologists responsible for Wild Horse expect trout fishing through the ice for 18” and larger fish to be good this winter. However, they say that fishing for yellow perch through the ice will be slow due to the fishery recovering from the spring 2022 die-off.
