The South Fork Coquille River received just enough rain this past weekend to get some steelhead moving upriver. The North Fork Coquille River has been running low and clear for a couple of weeks now. Steelhead anglers have been catching a few hatchery winter steelhead in the Coquille Basin steelhead rivers but overall fishing has been slow. This year’s steelhead run does not appear to be a big run of fish so anglers will have to work a little harder to catch a fish to take home.
Drift boat anglers reported a tree down across the river on the South Fork Coquille River between the Myrtle Groove driftboat launch and the 7 Mile marker driftboat launch. Drift boats can make it around this tree at higher flows but it may become a problem as the river levels continue to drop.
Trout fishing in streams and rivers will reopen May 22.
