The water temps out here jumped up a few degrees this week, going from 42 to 49 degrees over the last 2 weeks, and we are hopeful that this should help the cause, making fish more active throughout the day. Yet today (Friday morning) the lake had snow flurries early with temps in the 20s which will delay the warming trend. Stormy days are still the name of the game here and timing your outing on days with overcast and moderate wind is best to assure consistent fishing. The best bite has mostly been from the middle of the lake up north, with the southern beaches slowing, likely due in part to the muddy water coming in from the Truckee, and the fact that the fish that are found down on this end of the lake are beginning to focus on spawning and will be tightlipped. All methods of fishing have been good, with each one having their day or even their hour, so have both a stripping rod and an indicator rod at your disposal for maximum versatility.
With the ever-increasing crowds out here, there has been a lot of beaches that fill up first thing in the morning and if you have a particular spot in mind that you would like to fish you better be there before sun-up to make sure you get it. If you don’t have a spot in mind, there’s a few things to look for when scouting out spots to fish for the day. First and foremost, a good drop off; while you may find fish along the more continuous drop offs this time of year, we haven’t quite seen the fish move in shallow yet and anywhere with a good drop off of 8 feet or more will provide better fishing right now.
Tufa Rock?
Next, look for Tufa rock; This will the best place to chuck indicator rigs, especially if you don’t have a ladder. Because of this, these will often be the first places to fill up as there’s only so many good spots with a tufa rock that drops to deep water, so get there early! If stripping, you will have a greater variety of beaches that you can effectively fish and the more consistent shelves can be a great place to start, but don’t sleep on the drop offs either! For those fishing with streamers, we highly recommend using a ladder or chair to open up some of the quieter beaches inaccessible for those stuck to the shoreline. This game will get better and better as we come into spring and the fish remain in shallow throughout the day.
Other things to consider when choosing a beach would be what part of the lake, as mentioned we have been seeing better days from the middle of the lake to the north (North Nets to Warrior Point), also be sure to give anglers plenty of space, while most people acknowledge that fishing close to others is a part of fishing out here, some people will react differently than others and this is the most common way that conflicts are started out here. be kind, ask if they mind some company and if things get too crowded, move around, there’s A LOT of shoreline to fish off of!
