The fish have really woken up this week. Water temperatures have begun to finally trend upwards and exceed 45 degrees around Farad, and 48 degrees around Sparks, NV. These warmer temps with less fluctuation throughout the day has initiated the spawn down the hill, and this week we’ve seen quite a few spawning redds pop up. We encourage anglers to give the lower river a brake this time of year from Downtown Reno and East to avoid inadvertently catching or stressing spawning fish, or accidentally walk on or near their redds which might inadvertently cover their eggs with silt making them unviable
Avoid Spawning Areas
Please let them do their thing, and fish higher up in the system where the rainbows have yet to begin their yearly dance. If you must fish down here, please target areas with deep water, pocket water or anywhere with substrate not suitable for spawning fish, I.E. mud bottom with deep or fast moving water. If you have any questions about what to look for or what to avoid, please feel free to reach out. From West Reno up the canyon to here in Truckee we have not seen any redds just yet, but that could change in the next week or two with these warmer days, so keep your eyes peeled for these oval shaped clearings on fine cobble, in shallow riffle water.
Skwala Hatch Continues
We’ve seen quite a few skwala adults kicking around this week, and we’d venture to guess that Easter Sunday and the following week should make for a good possibility for some dry fly action using these early season stones. The other exciting hatch this week is the first caddis of the season in the lower canyon, and we can’t wait for the prospect of warm summer evenings fishing these bugs for eager trout during the last hour of light, it’s closer than we think! As of now we recommend using a nymph set up with a stonefly attractor and a baetis, midge or caddis pupa dropper.
Streamer Bite
This has also been a good season for streamers and using olive or natural colored sculpins has been producing some pretty stunning fish as of late. This week, one of our fishing guides, Nate Cutler found a great brown, in addition to some nice 14”-16” rainbows and browns on the river while chucking streamers.
