The river continues to fish well for those getting out right now, and with see mingly tough conditions, the crowds have been light for this time of year and fishing pressure is low. The high-water tactics of fishing pockets of slow water using attractor nymphs or streamers has been the most productive method and both indicators or tight lining will be the best way to present these offerings. This is the best time of year to find those big Truckee River fish that have been pushed into the few areas of slow water available to them. While the Truckee seems huge right now, it’s actually quite small when thought of in terms of where fish can really hold.
This means that a lot of walking will be involved until areas with water that is 3-4 feet deep and at a walking speed are found. These areas that also contain structure, such as a boulder, a cut bank or any other areas with additional cover for the fish will almost certainly contain a few trout. Fish these areas thoroughly, making sure to pick the runs apart by starting in close and progressively working your way out to the edge of the fast water, as you need to bump these fish in the face right now to get them to eat. Using attractor nymphs such as worms, eggs, stoneflies, crawdads, or heavy weighted streamers will continue to be the best bet in the coming weeks. We don’t see this river coming down to typical flows any time in the immediate future, but that shouldn’t stop you, in reality this could be the best time of year to find the largest fish in the river.
