EAST WALKER RIVER
The flows on the East have been lowered to around 450 this week and the river seems to be livening up quite a bit. Most of the anglers we’ve spoken to have been reporting from 5 to 15 fish per half day. We also spoke to a DFW employee who was on the river doing creel surveys and he said most of the anglers he talked with reported 7 to 9 fish per half day, so that seems pretty consistant. The nymphing has gotten better with fish being caught on San Juan worms, worm jigs, rainbow warriors, perdigon nymphs, stonefly nymphs among others. There’s also still been some action on streamers like sculpzilla, double bunny, dead drift crayfish and zonkers.
SCEIRINE RANCH
We didn’t get any reports back from the ranch this week but as soon as we do we’ll pass the information along.
HUNEWILL POND
The pond only had a few anglers this past week but fished well for the folks who went out there. They’re still fishing leech patterns, soft hackles and there’s still been a little action on dry/dropper rigs with hoppers on top and soft hackles, zebra midges, copper johns and flashback emergers underneath.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR
The Reservoir is still fishing very well with lots of good reports coming in from anglers fishing the Robinson and Buckeye channels from boats over in Buckeye Bay. We also had one good report from some anglers fishing from the shore just North of the public launch ramp, they even got a nice 4+ pounder, that is the first good report we’ve had from shore anglers for some time. Over in the channels they are eating mice tails, pinched crawlers and power bait very well and the fly fishing has also been very good dropping balanced leeches off of an indicator.
KIRMAN LAKE
We had a couple good reports come in from Kirman this week with anglers reporting 3 to 6 fish per day, some on mini jigs, and for flies they were using leech patterns, soft hackles, seal buggers stillwater nymphs and scud patterns. The fish reported were mostly in the 15 to 18 inch range and very healthy. It doesn’t sound like there are any temperature problems so far and being this late in August we will likely not have any this year.
TWIN LAKES
The Twins are still very consistant with lots of nice fish being brought in from both lakes. Trolling is still producing with Rapalas, kastmasters, Thomas Bouyants and night crawlers, bait anglers are doing well with power bait, mice tails, pinched crawlers and inflated crawlers. Fly anglers are getting into some nice fish with seal buggers, Twin Lakes Specials, matukas and soft hackles.
WEST WALKER RIVER
The flows on the West are now fluctuating between 450 and 500 cfs and though we’ve had a few decent reports it is still pretty difficult to fish. There’s lots of water still coming off the mountain from snow melt and we’ve had some thunder showers this week that have muddied up the water for short periods of time as well. If you’re going to give it a try in spite of the higher flows, by all means be careful, it’s a very powerful river and you don’t want to be caught off guard. Lure anglers can try some slightly larger Panther Martins, Vibrax spinners and Thomas Bouyants while bait anglers can go with salmon eggs, power eggs and crawlers.
VIRGINIA LAKES
The Virginias are still fishing very well for anglers who are getting out and away from the shore, lots of fish are being caught on mini jigs like Hook Up Baits and Sierra Slammers as well as Thomas Bouyants and Kastmasters. There are also fish being caught on power bait, mice tails and pinched crawlers. Fly anglers are doing well with wooly buggers, Twin Lakes Specials, mini leeches, soft hackles and zug bugs.
