UPPER WILLIAMSON RIVER:

Fishing was very poor at the Old Rocky Ford section of the river. The redband might have moved upstream. Grasshoppers are abundant. The Sand Creek and Yamsi ranches provide good pay to fish fly-fishing.

LOWER WILLIAMSON RIVER:

The river increased in flow (524 cfs). Numerous mayflies and caddisflies are hatching. Currently, very small mayflies (Tricos and BWOs) are the best insect to match. A size 16 to 18 pheasant tail matches this hatch well. ‌

Please remember no treble hooks or bait allowed on the river. Most fly anglers use a clear intermediate fly line with 6 to 8-pound fluorocarbon leaders and swing fly patterns deep.‌

Look for the giant Hex mayflies to hatch. These hatch right at dark around 9:30 p.m. Best fishing the Hex hatch is from just above Hwy 97 to near the Nature Conservancy boat ramp below Modoc Point. Look for areas just off the aquatic vegetation in slower backwater. The Hex hatch has been poor this year but there are still a few around. ‌

Areas above Chiloquin will be crystal clear, very cold water. Fishing is always very challenging in this stretch. A recent float of the area above Chiloquin Bridge observed very low numbers of redband trout compared to previous years. Brown trout are also more common above Chiloquin.‌

Yellow perch fishing has been excellent below Modoc Point Road bridge. They are somewhat difficult to find, but once you find them stay there. ODFW is encouraging harvesting as many as you can!
