The Little Truckee continues to see excellent fall flows and the dry fly fishing has been very good. With the cooler days we have expected the PMD’s to disappear, but reports coming in to the shop are suggesting that there are still a few of these summer bugs present, however, we don’t expect them to last much longer.
The best dry fly fishing remains on the BWO’s, with the hatch starting mid-day and going through the afternoon. They have been mostly a size 18-20 and if in doubt err on the side of smaller. 6x tippet is a must have when presenting these small bugs both on top and subsurface, these fish are picky but once you unlock the code, it’s not uncommon to have some stellar days out here in terms of both numbers and size of fish.
The brown trout are currently spawning and should be avoided at all costs, please avoid fishing shallow riffles this time of year as to not inadvertently hook any fish that are actively spawning. Also, avoid wading in these same waters to avoid stepping on or near their redds, allowing their eggs to remain silt-free and viable. If you have any questions on appropriate etiquette when fishing during spawning season, please don’t hesitate to ask, the future generation of these wild fish is not only our livelihood, it’s also our passion, and is incredibly important to us.
