The East is running at about 262 cfs right now and yesterday on the California side it fished excellent! We had many reports from anglers who had great days nymphing and streamer fishing down there for the opener, we even had a couple anglers who told us they had 50+ fish to the net during their time down there!! There didn’t seem to be lots of larger fish being caught but the fish in the 12 to 18 inch range were extremely active. We did hear of some fish over 20” being caught, just not a lot of them. It sounded like the fishing all the way down to Murphy’s Pond, and even further was very good. Some of the patterns we heard good news about include: poxyback stones, Pat’s rubber leg, wired stonefly, perdigon nymph, picky eater perdigon, drag queen, darth baetis, sculpzilla, ziwi, dali lama and cousin it streamer, just to name a few. Not sure what the flows will do in the coming weeks but now sure seems like a great time to be on the EW!!
Also, some food for thought, in the Fish and Wildlife Departments infinite wisdom they have decided to not make barbless hooks mandatory on the East Walker, this is absolutely going to be detrimental to the life if this amazing river in the future, if you care at all about the East Walker and its sustainability, please pinch your barbs, if everyone adheres to this practice it will help the East Walker River to keep on being a world class fishery. Thanks for your consideration.
