Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

Trout Creek Outfitters

Report Date:

https://troutcreekoutfitters.com/

The Truckee has continued to see warm water temps this week, and we will likely be in for a few more weeks of this before temps cool off consistently. This does not mean you cannot fish, it means we ask you to be aware of when you’re fishing and limiting you time on the water to the morning hours along certain stretches of the river to assure you’re practicing safe catch-and-release and not putting undue stress on the wild trout found here. In our opinion, you should not be fishing at all past 10am around downtown Reno or anywhere farther east for the moment. Morning lows at the Sparks gauging stations are at 66 and peaking at 75 in the evening. The Verdi and Mogul area will be slightly colder, but still warmer than anything in the canyon, hitting 68 degrees mid-morning, depending on where you land. The area where the water will be coldest will be in Hirschdale, where there is cold water getting released from Boca reservoir. Upstream of this area is getting equally as hot as downstream, and water temps at Glenshire should be monitored closely.

Fish are holding in fast water right now. Picking apart pocket water, fast riffles or the tops of runs will continue to be the best way to find fish. Crawdads have been fishing better and better by the day, as August is one of the best months for fishing these high protein meals. We have noticed an increase in activity from the brown trout this week, and this trend will continue for the next few months as they begin to near their spawn. Other bugs of note would be stoneflies, PMDs, and caddis. For those willing to get those early starts, the bite has been pretty damn good, and will only get better and better as we come into fall.
