The Metolius River is fishing exceptionally well right now, making it a prime fall destination. Nymphing is especially productive—try a double nymph rig with a golden stone or October caddis as the lead, paired with a smaller caddis or mayfly pattern. Be ready for various hatches, including caddis, BWOs, PMDs, and rusty spinners, with the latter providing excellent late afternoon action. For caddis, stick to tan, green, and gray elk hair or X2 Caddis in sizes 14-16. Flavs are also around, so have #14-#16 Flavs ready by noon and keep fishing them until late afternoon. PMDs, BWOs, and Mahogany Duns can hatch throughout the day, depending on the river’s thermal zones, so stay flexible. Bull trout are responding well to large streamers, and swinging leeches or sculpin patterns can attract big rainbows too. Though Kokanee haven’t started their run yet, it's coming soon and will boost fishing for other species.Overall, conditions are excellent, with varied hatches and great nymphing opportunities. Grab your gear and hit the water for some stellar fall fishing!
