Exceptional Time of Year on the Truckee!

Trout Creek Outfitters

This is an exceptional time of year to find some of the best trout fishing on this river. In our opinion the months of October and November are only rivaled by prime months such as March or June in terms of the quality of fishing here on the Truckee. Fall provides some of the best fishing of the year, so long as we have the water, and this year we do! The crowds are minimal in town, the bite is great all day, and the big fish are feeding aggressively. As air temps drop this week, so too have the water temps and the fish have begun to spread out amongst the runs a bit more. While we do continue to find that the majority of our fish are still in fast water (I.E. the tops of buckets, pocket water and riffles), there are also a few fish sitting back in some of the slower water as well. These water types are where dry droppers, streamers, or light indicator set ups will really shine over the ever-popular tight line presentations that will continue to kill it in the fast stuff. With the continued pleasant weather, we are still seeing some action on grasshopper patterns, and both these and October caddis are working well for the dry on a dry dropper set up. For our nymphs we are putting a heavy focus on brown stoneflies in sizes 6-8 paired with either a BWO or a midge in sizes 16-20. The egg bite is also on, and orange or yellow glow bugs have been working well this week especially as a alternative attractor nymph to the larger and far more popular stonefly nymphs or crawdads. The streamer bite has also been steadily picking up, especially towards dark. Try olive, black, white or yellow baitfish patterns to move some of those large browns waiting on that big meal to swim by.
