We are excited to see how well the Little Truckee is fishing after so many weeks of low water out here this fall. At 115 CFS, there is both great dry fly fishing and nymphing right now. The baetis continue to hatch with great consistency mid-day, and this is a fun way to test your skill when throwing small, delicate dries to incredibly speculative tailwater trout. In between hatches, the nymph fishing has been spectacular. The 2 main bugs right now are baetis and midges, and this will not change until spring, so now is a good time to load up on these patterns in all stages to imitate whatever life cycle the trout are keyed in on at that moment. The baeits are around a size 18-20, but anglers out here will often fish smaller than life size to get an advantage over these hyper-selective fish. As the flows come up, we find it less important to use 7x tippet and have been doing well on 6x paired with a good drift. This will also help with your ability to land some of the larger fish in the system right now, which there are a lot of. If the dry fly game is what you’re after, the top parking lot will be your best bet at this time. But on a weekend, especially a holiday weekend with good weather such as this one, you should expect to be fishing around others. For the angler looking to nymph fish out here, you have much more good water you can cover, and we have been finding excellent quality fishing all throughout the river system, from the inlet to the meadow.
