https://troutcreekoutfitters.com/After the last storm pushed through, we had a few days of sunny weather and fair fishing conditions as the flows dropped and the water cleared up a bit. With this next storm now arriving, we expect the flows to rise once again, and fishing on the river this week will almost certainly be tough.
Keep an eye on the water clarity if you plan to fish from below the Hirschdale area down through Reno. If you are itching to fish moving water this week, look for the slow deep buckets in the canyon where there is still some slow water for the fish to hold in, or try the sections in Nevada where they divert water via canals for hydro electric or for Reno’s water source. While these sections are often too low to provide good fishing, when the flows come up like this, the low flow sections can be your bet at finding good fishable water.
Streamer fishing will be a fun and effective method to fish right now, and heavy weighted streamers on a sink tip is important to slow down your presentation and stay in front of fish for as long as possible. Use heavy tippet, such as 0x or 1x and put a bunch of drifts through any bit of slow water you can find.
If nymphing, focus on fishing larger profile flies and attractor patterns such as Pat's Rubber Legs and Squirmy Worms. You can safely size up to 3x or even 2x in these conditions and give yourself a shot at landing a proper trophy fish.
